In the first half of the 20th century, many of these animals were on most every farm.  When meat production became industrialized, the animals disappeared from the small farms for the sake of convenience and now many of them are numbered only in the hundreds worldwide. 

By raising, and, yes, eating these animals we are ensuring their future.  Farmers aren't going to raise the endangered breeds unless there is a market.

In addition to conserving the breeds, our health benefits tremendously as well.   Grass fed meats have less fat than commercially raised grain fed meats. Grass-fed chicken eggs have 20 times more omega-3 fatty acid.  Pigs raised on pasture have 300 percent more vitamin E and 74 percent more selenium (a vital antioxidant) in their milk than pigs raised in confinement.
